In 1843, Scotia, owned by John Jones, brought Edward Shortland the Protector of Aborigines to Bluff. He proclaimed Jones' station to be the best managed and most successful station on the southern coast.
Another well known man also traveled on Scotia when Reverend James Watkin sailed from Waikouaiti to Stewart Island in February 1844.
