Cachalot
In August 1838, Captain Langlois of Cachalot tried to make official his purchase of Banks Peninsula from local Maori by asking them to sign a copy of the land sale document he had written in French. The chiefs obliged by signing the document through copying the design of their facial tattoo, (moko), onto it.
For ownership of the entire peninsula, Langlois thought it reasonable to pay the equivalent of six pounds worth of clothing and a pistol.
