In 1814, a report surfaced that New Zealand Māori had stolen a whaleboat from a ship called Matilda, while she was at anchor.
Seven years later, a man referred to as a lascar, was found living among Māori at Otago. He claimed to be from the ship Matilda and said that his boat mates had been eaten.
